The Church of Science
2020 / Installation, sound and objects
Taking the form of a worship setup, this project visualises a key methodology used in contemporary science: reductionism. Reductionism suggests that all sciences are reducible to physics and chemicals. The work concretes this idea by fragmenting and analysing the image of a day-to-day food (sliced fish) and reducing its parts to chemical and physical data that are visible in the stained glass and digital bible created for the exhibition. By developing a cult-like environment around reductionism, our work suggests a reflection on so-called truth, our belief in these scientific models and theory to achieve it and invites us to question their legitimacy in the same way we have questioned the validity of religion for over a century.
